NRCP Work Plan
Following the formal designation of the 14 American Heritage Rivers in July 1998, partners in Alleghany, Ashe, Watauga and Grayson Counties developed the Headwaters Work Plan with over 60 projects in four categories: natural resource protection with an emphasis on water quality, economic revitalization, cultural resource preservation and education & training. The Headwaters Work Plan was completed later that year following over seventy meetings with a total of 1,750 hours of community in-kind work. Over two hundred community members participated in listing and developing projects.
While the nomination envisioned a three to five year time frame for a similar process to be completed in Virginia and West Virginia, strong enthusiasm and support expedited the planning process throughout the New River watershed. The US Environmental Protection Agency provided a planning grant of $40,000, which enabled over 1,200 citizens, agencies, organizations and businesses to develop the plan of work for our Virginia and West Virginia partners.
Approximately 1,500 agencies, organizations and individuals have participated in the development of the New River's Work Plan for the twenty-one New River watershed counties. Three hundred thirty-four priority projects were identified in the six program areas of:
- Historic & Cultural Preservation
- Education & Training
- Economic Revitalization
- Natural Resource Protection
- Agriculture
- Transportation & Trails
New River Community Partners released the final, integrated watershed-wide work plan one year following the formal American Heritage River designation. The Work Plan continues to be updated and expanded. The Work Plan and the resulting projects and accomplishments reflect the hard work and dedication of many groups and individuals along the New River.
Currently, the New River Work Plan is available by hard copy only. New River Community Partners is working toward providing this expansive document through our website.
